About Swallowtail
My name is Cathey Hargrove and my love affair with growing things began over 30 years ago when we bought our first home in Blacksburg, Virginia. That affair continued as we moved from Blacksburg to Tampa, Florida in 2001, and then back to Roanoke County, Virginia in 2017. My formal education consists of a B.S. in Management from Virginia Tech, but my love of growing led me to become a Master Gardener in both states.
Of course, this growing passion started with tomatoes, since my husband was, and is, obsessed with them. But we quickly expanded into more vegetables, flowering perennials, shrubs, and even trees. I admit that for many years I considered annual flowers to be too ephemeral and short-lived to spend time on. I’m so glad that perception has changed since they make some of the best cut flowers!
Over time, my 6-year old Roanoke County growing space of over 3000 sq. ft. (and growing) has gone from a mostly perennial pollinator garden to more of a mix of ornamentals, with more and more being great for cut flowers. Of course, it still attracts plenty of pollinators. Thus, the name Swallowtail, in honor of one of our favorites.

I MAY NOT GET AN AWARD FOR BEST PHOTOGRAPHY BUT THERE ARE NO STOCK PHOTOS HERE. JUST THE REAL DEAL FROM MY GARDEN. FYI: NOT ALL OF THESE ARE CUT FLOWERS. REMEMBER I STARTED OUT WITH A POLINATOR GARDEN.
